इस बार हमारी शीर्ष कथा एक नहीं कई मजमूनों से बनी है. इसमें असद जैदी की हिन्दी कविता १८५७: सामान की तलाश (२००८) का अंग्रेज़ी अनुवाद और उस पर राजेश कुमार शर्मा की अंग्रेज़ी टिप्पणी का हिन्दी अनुवाद, चंद्र प्रकास देवल की १६वीं शताब्दी में कवियों के मरण-धरणे की इतिहास-विस्मृत घटना पर लिखी राजस्थानी-हिन्दी पुस्तक ‘झुरावो’ (२००८) के कुछ अंशो और पुस्तक की भूमिका के अंग्रेज़ी अनुवाद, कुंवर नारायण की सत्तर के दशक में प्रकाशित हिन्दी कहानी ‘मुग़ल सल्तनत और भिश्ती’ का अंग्रेज़ी अनुवाद और इन सब मजमूनों की पृष्ठभूमि में इतिहास-लेखन और साहित्य-लेखन के अंतर्संबंधों पर समाजेतिहासकार सुधीर चंद्र का अंग्रेज़ी निबंध शामिल है.

सुधीर का निबंध इतिहास और साहित्य की पारस्परिकता को अनुशासनात्मक/विधात्मक सीमाओं और निष्ठाओं के परिप्रेक्ष्य में पढ़ता है. और ऐसे मजमूनों की संभावनाएं तलाश करता है जिनमें बिना ‘अनैतिहासिक’ हुए इतिहास(लेखन) गल्पात्मक/साहित्यिक हो सके और बिना ‘असाहित्यिक/अगल्पात्मक’ हुए साहित्य(लेखन) ऐतिहासिक हो सके और कहता है कि साहित्य तभी अधिक ‘प्रामाणिक’ ढंग से ऐतिहासिक हो सकता है जब वह ‘गल्पात्मक/साहित्यिक’ बना रहे.

This time around, our lead story consists of not one but many pieces: it has Asad Zaidi’s Hindi poem 1857: Samaan ki Talaash along with an English translation and with Rajesh Kumar Sharma’s commentary; it has excerpts from, and the preface to, Chandra Prakash Deval’s long poem in Rajasthani, Jhuravo, based on an incident from the 16th century, long-forgotten by history – in English and Hindi translations; it has the English translation of Kunwar Narain’s story Mughal Saltanat aur Bhishti from the 1970s; and, against the backdrop of these works, it has an essay by the social-historian Sudhir Chandra on the inter-relationships of history and literature.

Sudhir’s essay reads the intertextuality of history and literature in the context of disciplinary integrities and limitations. It tries to find possibilities in texts where historical (writing) becomes fictional/literary without losing its historicity, and literary (writing) becomes historical without losing its literariness/fictiveness, and says that literature can be more “authentically” historical only by remaining fictional/literary.

यह महान नार्वीजी कवि उलाव हाउगे का जन्मशती वर्ष है. रुस्तम (सिंह) हाउगे का एक प्रतिनिधि संकलन हिन्दी में तैयार कर रहे हैं और यहाँ प्रस्तावित पुस्तक की भूमिका के साथ प्रस्तुत है हाउगे की इक्कीस कवितायें जो प्रस्तावित संकलन की तरह ही उनके सारे रचनाकर्म के आर-पार चुनी गयी है. हाउगे को, अनुवादक के शब्दों में ‘मेरे पढ़े कवियों में सबसे कम सरलमति’ कवि, को पढ़ना, न सिर्फ़ आधुनिकता द्वारा निर्मित मनुष्य-केन्द्रिक सभ्यता तंत्र के दूसरी तरफ़ देखना है, एक ऐसी कविता का सामना करना भी है जो मनुष्य के ‘पूर्णतम’ अकेलेपन को ओझल नहीं होने देती.

This is the birth centenary of the great Norwegian poet Olav Hauge. Rustam (Singh) is preparing a representative collection of Hauge’s work in Hindi. We present you the preface to the proposed book as well as 21 poems by Hauge from across his oeuvre. Hauge is, in the words of the translator, “one of the least gullible poets I have read” and reading him not only forces us to look at the other side of modern, human-centric civilization, it also brings us face to face with our “utter solitude”, our “complete aloneness in the world.”

This text written by a school-teacher and education-officer is, on one hand, a “family saga” – of a family that has been active in the field of education for a hundred years; on the other hand, this text is also a “private” document (a sequence of letters written to Purwa Yagnik Kushwaha) of more than 60 years, from 1935 to 1999, made possible only due to genuine internalization of the “public”. Starting from an “idealistic” time when education was supposed to be a humanitarian activity, to a time when education became a career, this text is also a document of the culture that was formed in the last century. Names like Annie Besant, Maria Montessori, Rahul Sankrityayan, Sumitranandan Pant, Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi, Harivansh Rai Bachchan and countless other proper nouns appear in these pages without their usual associations and they are recorded the way hundreds of other people and incidents are.

एक स्त्री शिक्षक और शिक्षा अधिकारी का लिखा यह पाठ एक ओर जहाँ एक ‘फैमिली सागा’ है – एक ऐसे परिवार का पुराण जो शिक्षा में सौ वर्षों से सक्रिय है; वहीं दूसरी ओर यह, पाठ १९३५ से १९९९ के मध्य ६० वर्षों से अधिक समय का एक ऐसा निजी दस्तावेज़ (यह मूलतः पूर्वा याज्ञिक कुशवाहा के नाम लिखीं गयी चिट्ठियों की लम्बी श्रंखला है) जो सिर्फ़ ओर सिर्फ़ खालिस सार्वजनिकता से ही सम्भव हुआ है. शिक्षा को मनुष्य के कल्याण का माध्यम मानने वाले ‘आदर्श’ के समय से शुरू होकर शिक्षा के करियर हो जाने के दो ज़मानों के बीच से गुजरता हुआ यह पाठ उस सांस्कृतिक का दस्तावेज़ भी है जो पिछली सदी में बना है. इस सांस्कृतिक में एनी बेसेंट, मैडम मोंटेसरी, राहुल सांकृत्यायन, सुमित्रानंदन पन्त, गणेश शंकर विद्यार्थी, हरिवंश राय बच्चन, और न जाने कितनी व्यक्तिवाचक संज्ञाएँ अपने ध्वन्यार्थ को लगभग खोकर आती हैं और आख्याता उनके आवागमन को वैसे ही दर्ज करती है जैसे सैकड़ों दूसरे लोगों और घटना-वृतांतों को.
